TINA LESER 50's RED BATIK ONE SHOULDER DRESS
In her youth, Tina Leser traveled extensively with her family through Asia, Europe and Africa, even living for a short time in India. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Sorbonne in Paris. When she married at 21, she moved to Honolulu where she began her career in fashion. All her travels to exotic locales were reflected in the casual, but sophisticated sportswear she designed. She loved utilizing textiles with Indian, Asian and Polynesian motifs and often handprinted her own fabrics. In the 1940’s she moved to New York and continued designing her fabulous “playclothes” and in 1945 won the prestigious “Coty Award” for her designs.
This 50’s one shoulder batik print sundress is a stunning example of her ethnic inspired clothing.
Nice medium to heavyweight cotton with white and brick red floral designs against a bright tomato red background.
Unique design joins the strap to the bodice with a matching fabric tie that laces and gathers the two sections together. The tie has tassels on both ends.
The full skirt is also very cleverly fashioned, with extra fabric added on the left, creating a beautiful draped, sarong like effect. A matching belt wraps and ties at waist and a gathered swag folds over the belt. All these distinctive design elements, coupled with the amazing fabric, make this a truly special dress.
