Recently while visiting Retro Renovation, one of my favorite blogs, I ran across a post about the amazing estate sale find of one of their readers. Apparently this gentlemen discovered a pile of authentic costume sketches done by Donfeld for Claudia Cardinale, to be worn in the 1967 movie “Don’t Make Waves”., which also starred Tony Curtis and Sharon Tate. They even have the original fabric swatches and they’re signed! Can you even stand it? At first he walked away from them, but changed his mind and went back and scooped them up. Smart man!!
Donfeld was a famous designer who began creating costumes for movies and television back in 1960. He dressed Barbara Streisand, Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Lee Remick, Jane Fonda and many other stars. He was nominated for four academy awards and beside “Don’t Make Waves” he also created the wardrobes for many other films, including “Days of Wine and Roses”, “Return to Peyton Place”, “Viva Las Vegas”, “Robin and the Seven Hoods”, “Fun with Dick and Jane” and “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They”.
So, needless to say, this lucky guy stumbled across quite the treasure according to a recent appraisal. I am absolutely GREEN with envy.
Have a look at some of the sketches below. The fashions are perfect for the late 60s swinging Malibu beach movie. You can see more of the sketches here.
Have you ever been at a garage sale, flea market or thrift and scored a really cool vintage collectible that you picked up for a song and then later found out it was worth oodles of money? Feel free to email me about it. I’ll be happy to do a “Show and tell” post about your fabulous find.
