I was thinking of spiders the other day. I know, I know. Why would anyone voluntarily do that? But I had just read a post by Vix over on the Vintage Vixen blog where she tells a harrowing tale of a horrifying encounter with one of those 8 legged beasts! And that got me thinking about ideas for Halloween costumes.
Spiders have long had an association with Halloween. Back in medieval times it was believed that they were the familiars of witches, along with cats, bats and toads. And there was a superstition that if you spotted a spider on Halloween, it was the spirit of a dead loved one watching you.
Then there’s the “black widow” symbolism of the woman who lures men into her “web”in order to seduce then kill her mate.
It’s no wonder they have a reputation for being evil. That and the aura of horror they evoke just because of their creepy crawly-ness makes them a classic theme for Halloween dress up.
So if you haven’t come up with a Halloween get up yet, I’ve put together a spider themed mood board to get the creative juices flowing, along with some arachna-fabulous vintage, victorian and gothic inspired costume ideas.
