Red & Green Vintage Holiday Fashions

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Have been surfing around on the “internets” , as one of my favorite funny men,  Stephen Colbert, likes to call it, looking for fabulously festive red and green vintage fashions that are perfect for wearing this holiday season.   I love looking at stuff and blog posts give me a perfect excuse to do it!

My first pick is this amazing 50’s dress from Fast Eddie’s Retro Rags with gorgeous red roses and green leaves that really pop against the white background.  Just add a little red cardigan, red jewelry,  and of course, red heels and lipstick and you’ll be the classiest doll on Christmas Day!

Now,  for the fancy schmancy shindig,  like an honest to goodness white tie event, how about this incredible red satin 50’s ball gown from Couture Allure Vintage? Definitely calls for opera length gloves and really glittery necklace and earrings.

And if you prefer the sleek lines of the 70’s, here’s a slinky rhinestone embellished  deep forest green jersey halter gown from Blue Velvet Vintage.  The style is a nod to the 1940s era, which was very common to the styles of the 1970s.   The waistband is rhinestone accented with the words “La Vive” , meaning  bright or vivacious, which is just what you’ll be when you  sashay out the door in this sexy little number!

Little Black Dresses-Recent additions at Blue Velvet Vintage

Friday, August 7th, 2009

The little black dress is a classic wardrobe staple and shopping for  new often leaves  you with a choice of cookie cutter styles.   And who wants to look like everyone else at their next cocktail party? But  if you choose a black vintage dress,  they are usually unique enough in construction, fabric and design details that you’re sure to stand out in that sea of LBDs.  Here are some of our recent additions that will help you show your individuality. Please visit our What’s New page for more little black dresses from the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Known for their chic, ladylike elegance, Herbert Sondheim manufactured dresses,  inspired by Paris fashions,  from the 30s through the 60s.  Jackie Kennedy even wore his dresses! He also taught at the Parson School of Design.

Donna Reed and I share the same birthday

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

That’s right, vintage stylistas. Today is my birthday and I did a little googling and found out Donna Reed, the queen of mid-century marital domestication,  and I were born on the same day.  Perhaps that explains my obsession with those 50s and 60s shirtwaist dresses with the full skirts.  Not so crazy about the stepford wife lifestyle, but dressing like one is another story!

Here is a photo of Donna Reed in all her 50’s housewifely glory.

Of course, her look on the Donna Reed Show is the one most people remember.  But I’ve found a bunch of great pictures on FanPix.Net that show off her glamorous side.

She also starred in many films before her television career, including It’s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart,  The Benny Goodman Story, Last Time I Saw Paris and  even won an Oscar for supporting actress in From Here to Eternity with Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra.

And here are a couple fabulous Donna Reed worthy dresses I found at Vintage Viruosa, just in case anyone wants to buy me a birthday present!
