Holiday Evening Gowns-1950

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Below are some photos of glamorous holiday evening gowns from a fashion spread in the December 1951 issue of Ladie’s Home Journal.  What I wouldn’t give to have a closet full of these!

The accompanying text for the article was written by Wilhela Cushman, who was fashion editor of the Journal for 25 years.

“Time to be feminine, to look the way men like to see you-in a drift of tulle, in lacy cotton over taffeta, in a column of satin with a trailing panel. Your shoulders are bare, your waistline bracelet-size, your skirts ruffled and puffed, fan pleated, side draped. You’ll wear opal colors-especially mauve, violet and blue. Your slippers will be jewel colored velvet and you’ll twine rhinestones or pearls round your arms and in your hair.”

Did you catch the part about the “bracelet sized waist”?  Now you know why so many dresses from that era have such small waistlines.  The hourglass shape was the height of fashion,  and women laced themselves into corsets and waistcinchers to create that extremely curvy look.

First up is a frothy pink confection by Ceil Chapman.  Reminds me of cotton candy!  And how about that silver Christmas tree with the pink roses on it? Swoon!

This next festive frock is an emerald green satin column gown with floating panel by Wilson Folmar.   Dresses with his label are sought after among savvy vintage clothing collectors.  He designed very stylish, higher end cocktail and evening wear.

Another smashing gown by Ceil Chapman in embroidered organdy over taffeta, accompanied by a gold taffeta coat.

This violet beauty is a Mark Mooring creation. He was a designer for Bergdorf Goodman and also a Coty Fashion Critics Award winner.

Dresses with his label are scarcer than hen’s teeth. So if you ever run across one, consider it the equivalent of hitting the lottery!

The Playsuit-A hot retro look for summer

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Playsuits, onesies, rompers, no matter what you choose to call them,  they are a hot retro look for summer.  So release your inner pinup and get yourself into one of these  sassy little outfits. They’re a more feminine and glamorous alternative to shorts and a tank top.

Below are photos of Dita Von Teese rocking this look. The nautical print is a vintage inspired style by Dolce and Gabbana. The red one looks like authentic vintage.  Of course, she looks absolutely fabulous in both.

Check out the cherry necklace. That and the hat really pull the look together. Love  the sunglasses and shoes too!

Uplifting Photos-1950’s Madame Adrienne Bra Designs

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Madame Adrienne was a popular bra designer in the 50’s, back when lingerie was way more  glamorous than anything Victoria’s Secret can come up with today.   This article “How to sell a bra” and photos, are from a 1953 issue of Pageant Magazine.

The author states that in order for Madame Adrienne to sell her well designed, perfectly good everyday bras,  she must dramatize the bra by “inventing, designing and publicizing other bras, equally well designed but somewhat more elaborate.”

This halter bra in the photo below is made  of baby somali leopard and sold for $1200.00 back in 1953.  It was also available in ocelot for the thrifty shopper at a mere $600.00.  Hmmm, must have been from her “Soon to be an endangered species collection.”

These deep plunge, wire tops sold for $18.50 and $32.50.  But if you had a rich sugar daddy,  you  could always have a sprinkling of real pearls added for $650.00,  or even diamonds for $7000.00.

Below is a “bra, waist cincher and skirt in red nylon velvet with mink trim and cape stole. For cozy at-homes. $1200.00″  This is  just a 50’s way of saying a hostess outfit for a casual get together at your home.   After all , one wouldn’t want to be stuck without something to throw on if visiting royalty showed up at the door!

This complicated little combo called the “Tulip”,  was a “bra plus slip plus waist cincher plus petticoat”.   A veritable steal at only $50.00! I don’t know why, but my weird mind is picturing some creepy guy on the the other end of the phone wanting to know what she’s wearing and when she tells him, he’s like  “Never mind, lady.  Sorry I asked.”

Model in top photo, below,  is wearing the “Midas Touch” bustier, decorated in tiny golden crystal bugle beads, which sold for $250.00. Below is the “Snow Queen” in white satin, with mink lined fichu.  Just a fancy name for a scarf, with the addition of fur, makes what is a plain bra worth $500.00.

These two lovely ladies modelled lingerie by day, but could be seen nightly performing at the famous Copacabana night club in New York City.   Caption in photo states “Still just bras, but add a tulle stole and they become dresses.”

So for any of you young chickies out there who think the idea of underwear worn as outerwear was invented by Madonna in the 80’s, now you know.

It just goes to show how fashion history repeats itself,   to be enjoyed another day with a whole new twist.

Donna Reed and I share the same birthday

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

That’s right, vintage stylistas. Today is my birthday and I did a little googling and found out Donna Reed, the queen of mid-century marital domestication,  and I were born on the same day.  Perhaps that explains my obsession with those 50s and 60s shirtwaist dresses with the full skirts.  Not so crazy about the stepford wife lifestyle, but dressing like one is another story!

Here is a photo of Donna Reed in all her 50’s housewifely glory.

Of course, her look on the Donna Reed Show is the one most people remember.  But I’ve found a bunch of great pictures on FanPix.Net that show off her glamorous side.

She also starred in many films before her television career, including It’s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart,  The Benny Goodman Story, Last Time I Saw Paris and  even won an Oscar for supporting actress in From Here to Eternity with Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra.

And here are a couple fabulous Donna Reed worthy dresses I found at Vintage Viruosa, just in case anyone wants to buy me a birthday present!

Baby, it’s cold outside! Time for a stylish vintage coat.

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Ok, so it's only been 65 degrees here,  which may not seem that cold to most people. But after living in Florida for many years,  it feels absolutely frigid to me!  I know, I know. I'm a wimp.   Sometimes it actually even dips into the 40's down here.  And that's when I wish I had myself a fabulous vintage winter coat.  So I did some searching and here are the ones I'm fantasizing about wearing during the next cold snap. If I had one of these lovelies to keep me warm,  I might not mind those occasional drops in temperature.

This first one is from the late 40s/early 50s. Flattering "New Look" style in black wool with fantastic black velvet diamond appliques. From Couture Allure Vintage-  $300.00

It’s a Shore Thing

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

For me nothing says summer like seashells. I am fortunate to have lived near the ocean all my life, and like most people, find these gems of the sea quite fascinating. It’s impossible for me to visit a beach without bringing home at least one whose color and shape called to me. Aside from their beauty, shells are also a reminder of happy times. Holding a handful of these little architectural wonders conjures up memories of past vacations, seaside cottages, sun, surf, ocean breezes and relaxing days exploring the shoreline.

But my love of seashells isn’t limited to just my souvenirs gathered from various beaches. Heck no!  I’m also enarmoured of any vintage item that has a seashell motif.  I especially love those fabulously kitschy wicker purses with plastic covered scenes of sealife on them that were popular in the 50’s and 60’s.

Here’s an adorable one I picked up recently in my travels.  It’s an Atlas of Miami. They manufactured some of the best of this style.

And here are some of my favorite seashell themed items I’ve discovered online.

Little shells float against a black and white coral design on this 1950’s Ceeb of Miami swimsuit. For sale at  The Good Ole Days.

So you see, for a few CLAMS you, too, can incorporate a fun shell theme into your summer wardrobe. You’re SHORE to get plenty of compliments if you do!
