A Look at Tall Ships and Nautical Fashions

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Well, I finally made my way down to Boston Harbor to see those magnificient classic sailing ships docked on the waterfront.  Boston is one of official ports of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge,  a regatta  that started  in Spain and will end up in Ireland.

Below are some shots I took. The rest are in my Tall Ships Sail Boston Photo Album.

The 185 foot Europa, from the Netherlands, docked at Rowes Wharf Marina at the Boston Harbor Hotel.

There’s such a air of romance that surrounds these majestic vessels.   You can’t help but fantasize about what it would be like to chuck the day job for a life of high seas adventure and exotic ports of call, accompanied by a crew of cute sailor boys, of course!

But  if you can’t stow away on a sailing ship, at least you can celebrate the seafaring life with some cute nautical inspired  fashion.   Here are some of my vintage style picks to keep you looking SEE worthy all summer!

Finally arrived in Boston and am resting after what felt like endless hours of driving yesterday.  Apparently there is a huge event here called Sail Boston and  something like 40 tall ships are docked in Boston Harbor.  It appears this event has attracted everyone on the planet, since it took a bazillion hours for me to get through the city. I’m hoping to make my way down to the waterfront to get some pictures of these spectacular old sailing ships. But I’ll do it by public transportation!

In the meantime, here are a couple of groovy items I found on one of my pit stops.

I couldn’t resist picking up this pair of gold high heeled sandals from the 1930s.  They look barely worn and would look stunning with this  old Hollywood style gown.

Then I found this groovy mod psychedelic print dress from the 60s or 70s with an “Emilio Borghese” label. Couldn’t find any information on the label, but the print and fabric are fabulous as most Italian knits tend to be.

If anyone reading this post knows anything about this label, please clue me in. I would love to know more about the designer of this dress.

Donna Reed and I share the same birthday

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

That’s right, vintage stylistas. Today is my birthday and I did a little googling and found out Donna Reed, the queen of mid-century marital domestication,  and I were born on the same day.  Perhaps that explains my obsession with those 50s and 60s shirtwaist dresses with the full skirts.  Not so crazy about the stepford wife lifestyle, but dressing like one is another story!

Here is a photo of Donna Reed in all her 50’s housewifely glory.

Of course, her look on the Donna Reed Show is the one most people remember.  But I’ve found a bunch of great pictures on FanPix.Net that show off her glamorous side.

She also starred in many films before her television career, including It’s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart,  The Benny Goodman Story, Last Time I Saw Paris and  even won an Oscar for supporting actress in From Here to Eternity with Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra.

And here are a couple fabulous Donna Reed worthy dresses I found at Vintage Viruosa, just in case anyone wants to buy me a birthday present!
