Faryl Robin Shoes on Sale at Zappos

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

This is a serious dilemma.  I want every single pair of these Faryl Robin  vintage inspired platform shoes.  They are so fabulously 40s looking and in such gorgeous colors. How can one even begin to decide?  Plus, they’re all 10% off  at Zappos

Farylrobinshoes

I’ve been really wanting a turquoise pair of shoes, but those camel and sage green suede ones, with the straps across the vamps, would look great with fall outfits.  Then of course, red shoes are my all time favorite  and the navy and ivory ankle strap beauties that look like something Rita Hayworth would have worn…..Lord have mercy!  All I can hope is that they’re out of my size on most of them, which will force me to narrow down my choices!

Fedora Lounge Event aboard the Queen Mary

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Queen_mary Received the annoucement below in response to a previous post of mine about Classic Style Magazine.  I decided it needed its own post, as it’s about the fifth annual  Fedora Lounge Queen Mary Event in Long Beach, California on November 16th and 17th.

From Kelly Wilbanks of Key Publishing Group,

"Come, join the rest of the loungers bedecked in the fashion of the 1930s and 40s for a weekend aboard the historic Queen Mary. Friday will be a casual dinner in the Promenade CafĂ© as people arrive from the far corners of the globe (or the states). Michael Key’s infamous tour will take place bright and early the following morning and a banquet dinner and dancing will round out the day Saturday evening. "

There’s also supposed to be a vintage fashion show and the prices they’ve arranged for cabins aboard this beautiful classic ocean liner are quite reasonable.

In Vogue- Newport Fashion Exhibit at Rosecliff

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Yesterday I had the immense pleasure of visiting Rosecliff, another of Newport’s spectacular mansions. The tour was fantastic and included a fashion exhibit and lecture by the Newport Preservation Society’s dress historian, Rebecca Kelly, called "In Vogue-Newport and the American Fashion Press 1880-1920."

First of all, for some background and a picture of the famous ballroom, to give you an idea of what a romantic atmosphere it has. At the turn of the century, silver heiress Theresa Fair Oerlichs hosted lavish parties in Rosecliff’s 40 x 80 ballroom, the largest in Newport. Cole Porter, a frequent guest, played and composed music there. Scenes from several movies have been filmed at the mansion, including "The Great Gatsby", the tango scene with Arnold Schwarzzeneger in "True Lies" and the court scenes from "Amistad." Even today, many weddings are held there and photographers use it frequently as a backdrop for fashion shoots.

Though they wouldn’t let us take photos inside, I was able to find this picture of the ballroom at the Visit Rhode Island Website. Doors running the length of the room open up onto a massive porch overlooking a pool with a fountain, a huge expanse of lawn, then the ocean beyond.

Here’s a photo I took from the porch on the backside of ballroom.

This years exhibit focuses on fashionable resort and sportswear, the evolution of which began at the turn of the century in vacation spots of the wealthy, such as Newport. Beside the collection of period costumes designed to accomodate women’s growing participation in outdoor activites, like horseback riding, yachting, golf and cycling(they called it wheeling back then), there was also a very interesting display of bathing costumes, including a wool Jantzen suit from the early 1900’s. I can just imagine how uncomfortable it felt when wearing it while wet, never mind it would probably make you sink like a rock! There was only one evening outfit in the display, but it was an amazing Worth gown from 1910. High waisted with a columnar shaped skirt, the popular silouette of that period. The skirt was comprised of tiers of fine red netting and beautiful red flowers with black centers were applied at the waist and bodice. It’s unfortunate they don’t allow anyone to take photos of anything inside these buildings, as it is really difficult to describe the beauty of this dress or anything else on display there, for that matter!!

The lecture tied in nicely with the clothing exhibit, covering how fashion periodicals, such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar were the first to begin reporting on the what the fashionable leisure class was wearing while summering in Newport and the subsequent rise of the American womens’ sportswear apparel industry. The lecture was also accompanied by magazine photos and illustrations depicting the popular resortwear fashions of that time.

Though the lecture was for one day only, I believe the fashion exhibit can be viewed all year as part of the regular mansion tour.

Out with the Jeans, In with the Dresses

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Now this is the kind of news that thrills me to no end! According to a recent  Newsday article  that I discovered  while reading  A Dress A Day , one of my favorite blogs,  dress sales have been skyrocketing.  It seems  women of all age groups now prefer the more ladylike look of dresses as opposed to the sportswear separates they usually choose for their casual attire.  Sales of dresses in the last year have increased 58 percent among 13-
to 17-year-olds, and 54 percent among 18- to
34-year-olds, meaning even younger women are becoming more willing to forgo jeans as a fashion mainstay.

Dresses definitely are a fun, yet classy, alternative to jeans and they’re easy to wear.  Just slip one on and go.  Unlike pants, there are a myriad of  dress style choices to flatter just about any figure. One reason why  I’m particularly happy that younger women have finally discovered this "trend with benefits" is perhaps we won’t be seeing so much of the "muffin top" syndrome anymore.  In case you’ve been living in a cave the last ten years, it’s the visually disturbing side effect of too tight hip hugger jeans  worn with tops that are too short, causing the flesh of the hips and lower abdomen to ooze up over the top of the waistband.  A dress is the perfect antidote for this horrible affliction.

Of course, those of us into vintage fashion or sewing have always appreciated the versatility of the dress. Since moving to Florida, I’ve adopted the vintage sundress as my outfit of choice and I never fail to get compliments when wearing one. You can go throw one on with some flip flops and you’ll look casually chic for a day of running erands.  Add high heeled sandals, a dressier purse and jewelry and the same dress will take you out to dinner in style.

Women have become accustomed to the option of dressing more like men, ever since they had to work in factories during WW1 and 2.   Society’s acceptance of ladies wearing pants was the beginning of designers blurring the line between traditional masculine and feminine clothing styles.  The dress, on the other hand,  will always be considered the exclusive fashion statement of the female of our species.  Though there are certain gentlemen who enjoy wearing frocks as much as us ladies do, I don’t forsee any imminent threat of husbands sashaying out of bedrooms across America, sporting their latest Marc Jacobs babydoll dress or, heaven forbid, showing up at parties wearing the same cocktail dress as their wives!

So ladies, bask in the glory of your own unique girliness and wear a dress today!

Upcoming Sturbridge Vintage Clothing Show

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

It’s time for another Vintage Fashion and Textile Show , scheduled for Monday, July 9 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts at the Sturbridge Host Hotel .   The show is held on the same week as the famous Brimfield Antique Show , which happens just a few miles down the road.

Having these two shows on the same week make it a vintage collectors’ heaven.   The textile show has hundreds of dealers offering an amazing selection of top quality vintage clothing and decorator fabrics and the antique show has thousands of dealers selling every kind of antique and collectible imaginable. You literally cannot shop the whole thing in one day.

So if you love all things vintage or antique,  and you’re going to be anywhere near western Massachusetts next week, this is the place to be.  Oh, and brings lots and lots of cash because there’s sure to be too much stuff you’ll have to have!

Liz Claiborne Vintage Dresses

Friday, June 29th, 2007

In memory of  business and fashion legend Liz Clairborne,  who passed away this week, I thought I’d feature a few dresses from her earlier labels.

She will always be remembered for revolutionizing the way women dressed in the workplace by providing them a casual, yet still dressy alternative to the suit. With many more women starting to work outside the home in the 60s and 70s, she had the foresight to realize most of them would neither desire, nor require more formal business attire. So the Liz Clairborne line of co-ordinating separates was launched in 1976, after years of her designing for other companies, including Tina Leser, Ben Reig, Dan Keller and Jonathan Logan’s "Youth Guild" junior label.

I still remember my mom going off to work in the 80s in her new "Liz" outfits.  She and her friends always enjoyed showing each other their newest "Liz" purchases, eagerly demonstrating how they could mix and match the pieces to extend their wardrobe.  Of course, since then, the company has diversified its line and acquired other companies along the way, including Ellen Tracy, Juicy Coutoure, Lucky Brand Jeans, Dana Buchman, Kate Spade, Monet, Trifari, Laundry by Shelli Segal  and Kenneth Cole.

In 1986 Liz Claiborne made Forbes Magazine top 500 companies in the United States, an amazing achievement and a testimony to what a woman can accomplish when she puts her mind to it!
