Swing In the New Year

Swing in the New Year

It’s time again to celebrate the old and bring in the new.  And if you’re anywhere near St. Petersburg, Florida, there are still tickets available to the  Swingin’ the New Year Dance at the historic Coliseum Ballroom.   Built in 1924,  it’s a festive and romantic venue where you can lindy hop, jitterbug or charleston your way into 2011 with the world renowned Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band.

The ballroom is walking distance from the St. Petersburg waterfront, historic Pier, dozens of restaurants and all the festivities of St. Pete’s  First Night Celebration.  So lots to do there.  And  it’s even supposed to warm up by Friday, so you won’t get frostbite walking around downtown!

My husband and I attend this event every year.  It is definitely one of the most fun times we’ve ever had on New Year’s Eve.   There is also a vintage fashion photo shoot and contest.  So glamorous vintage attire is recommended!

If you don’t make it this year, then be sure to mark it on your calendar as the place to be on December 31, 2011.

Vintage Diversity-The Most Fun Vintage Store in South Florida

Every now and then I like to do a post featuring a cool vintage shopping destination.  And today I’d like to showcase one of my favorite  stores, Vintage Diversity,  right down here in sunny South Florida.

If you love vintage clothing and home decor and you happen to find yourself in the area, do yourself a great big favor and drop by this mecca of mid century marvels.

A  costume store, vintage clothing boutique and retro culture museum all rolled into one.  You can wander around in there for hours looking at all the fun stuff owner  Melanie Garbo Byrnes  has collected over the years.  Much of it for sale, of course!  There is so much groovylicious stuff to choose from that there is no way you can leave this place without buying something. Very reasonably priced, I may add.  So you can really stock up!

And, in case you happen to have a retro themed party to attend while you’re in town, they’ll deck you out from head to toe in authentic vintage attire that you can rent for your event.

Not only are there are racks, upon racks of vintage clothes for both men and women, there are literally thousands of accessories to complete any outfit.

The creative Ms. Melanie also does a fabulous job of putting together kitschy cool displays that are little windows into the past.

Both for for your viewing AND shopping pleasure!

Swing in the New Year at St. Petes Coliseum Ballroom

Coliseum ballroom

Well, now that the Christmas gorge fest is over, it's time to start working off some of those cookies you washed down with all that  brandy spiked eggnog.   A fun way to burn off those calories, while wearing some fancy shmancy vintage dress,  is to jitterbug your way into 2009 at a  New Year's Eve swing dance party.

This year the Tampa Bay Swing Gang and Swing Time  have joined forces to host the most spectacular New Year's swing dance event ever held in Florida!  If you live here, or are just visiting for the holidays, you need to get yourself over to the historic Coliseum Ballroom in St. Petersburg for some serious jumpin and jivin.

It's open to all ages and it doesn't even matter if you never tried dancing before. They're giving a free lesson from 8-9 pm and there's no partner necessary!

There's even going to be a vintage fashion contest.  Winners get a free professional photo shoot by Buffalo Gal Vintage,  gift certificates and other cool prizes.  So I'm off to search my inventory for something fabulous to wear!

There’s sure to be a great bunch of dealers selling  vintage clothing, jewelry, accessories and home decor. Plus, food and refreshments, a vintage car show and swing dancing.

I’ve both bought and sold at these shows and I it’s always a fun time with lots of quality stuff for the vintage lover. Definitely stop by, if in the area.
