Sabina Kelley Looks Amazing in one of our Gowns!

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

I was so flattered when Sabina Kelley, the famous international pinup model and burlesque dancer, contacted me about wearing one of our vintage style evening gowns to wear for her 2010 pin up calender.

The purple satin mermaid dress she chose had that perfect 40s old hollywood  look for the shot.  Of course, the gorgeous Sabina looked positively amazing in it and her photographer, Brian Brown, did a smashing job of  capturing the classic glamour of a bygone era.

You can purchase her calendar here.  Would make a great gift for anyone who appreciates tattoo art,  classic vintage pinup and burlesque.

And if you covet the gown,  you can purchase one at Blue Velvet Vintage. It also comes in midnight blue, ivory and black.

In Memory of Farrah and Michael

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Yesterday was a very sad and shocking day indeed.   Two pop culture icons passed away within hours of each other.  Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer and Michael Jackson died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest.

Farrah was everybody’s favorite “Charlie’s Angel”.   Not only was she the pinup model whose famous red swimsuit poster remains the best selling of all time, but she was also an emmy award winning actress.

And, of course,  there was the hair.  I remember back in the 70s begging my aunt, who was a hairdresser, to please cut my hair like Farrah’s.  It  was the perfect look to go with my disco dresses! I had never coveted a hairstyle before, but there was something about those feathered layers and fullness and those swept back wings that just struck me as incredibly sexy and glamorous.   Of course,  so did a gazillion other girls.  If there is a history book of hair, then that style should be in it.

Farrah was an irresistable combination of sensuous siren meets all American girl next door.   As you can see from the photos below,  on her, the sporty casual look took on a whole new glamorous dimension.

Then there is Michael, the “King of Pop”. A true original, an amazing dancer, entertainer and musical genius, whose myriad style transformations influence the fashion industry till this day.  For instance, the military inspired jacket below is  from Balmain’s 2009 spring/summer collection.

It started with wide bellbottoms, fringed vests, combinations of wild prints and platform shoes in the 1970s.  In the 80s and 90s there were parachute pants,   pegged pants and fedoras, sequined blazers, leather jackets with lots of zippers and military details.  Let’s not forget the famous rhinestone encrusted glove and the fact that Michael actually made it cool to wear black loafers with white socks.

Though both of these individuals had lives fraught with controversy,  and were not always portrayed by the press in the most favorable light, no one can deny their lives touched all of us in so many good ways.  They leave behind a trail of  fond memories  for those of us who appreciate their talent,  individualism and unique sense of style.  My hope for Farrah, after all her suffering, is that she has become a real angel and that Michael is moonwalking his way through heaven.

Fond farewell to pinup legend Bettie Page

Bettie leopard
Bettie Page, the famous pinup model of the 1950's, died yesterday at the age of 85 from pneumonia after suffering a heart attack several days ago.

Her mystique will surely live on,  inspiring writers, artists, photographers, fashion designers and fans for generations to come.  As the ultimate good girl/bad girl sex goddess she has gained legendary cult status.

According to a CNN article she was one of the most photographed people of the twentieth century.

From her agent,  Mark Roesler "She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her
free spirit and unabashed sensuality. She is the embodiment of beauty."

Introducing our latest vintage reproduction dress

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Just in time for summer, here's a peek at the latest vintage reproduction dress design we're offering at Blue Velvet Vintage. Created in five different prints, two tropical florals, a Hawaiian tiki travel print,  a pink and white polka dot and a cute retro daisy print.  We named it the "Coquette" because of it's adorably flirty style.  Inspired by sundresses from the 40s snd 50s, they've even got metal zippers just like authentic vintage dresses!

We were fortunate to have the lovely Miss Amanda Lee modelling the dresses for us.   Amanda is a pinup model who bears a striking resemblance to Betty Grable. Among her many talents, she's also an expert on 1940's vintage hair and makeup techniques. Check out her My Space Page to read more about her.

Bettie Page, Pinup Photos and Discarded Bikinis

Bunny6
Just discovered an interesting article  on Bettie Page and photographer, Bunny Yeager,  written by the owner of Glamoursurf ,  who has a fabulous website specializing in vintage swimwear.

Bunny, a well known glamour photographer in the 50's, was instrumental in making  Bettie one of the most notorious pinup models of all time. She took Bettie's famous "jungle girl" pictures in Miami, where Bunny still resides today.

According to the article, Bettie used to sew her own bikinis for her shoots.  Well, she decided after giving up her modelling career, to chuck them all, thinking she would never have any use for them again.  Can you imagine?  I nearly hyperventilated when I read that.  She was always a humble woman, so never could conceive the impact she would have on pop culture in the years to come.

She's become such a cult icon, there's even a Bettie Page Halloween Theme Cruise leaving October 31st, 2008, from San Diego, with Bettie lookalike contests,  burlesque performances, fashion shows by the Bettie Page Clothing Company, appearances by Bernie Dexter and pinup artist, Olivia, plus lots of great rockabilly bands.  This ultimate celebration of Bettie Page is sure to be a rockin' good time!

1940’s Pinup Styles

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

In case you haven’t noticed,  the 40’s pinup look is now a hot fashion trend.  Here’s some interesting information on the evolution of the WW2 era pinup,  with links to other related sites.

It’s a always been a style  beloved by those of us who collect and wear vintage fashion because it’s so cute, flattering, feminine and sexy.  Sort of a  mischievous girl next door look.

But the style is now experiencing a revival, thanks to celebrities like DIta Von Teese and Christine Aguilera. Even designers showed interpretations of of those cute 40s style high waisted shorts in their 2008 summer collections.  But if you really want to channel your inner Vargas girl next season,  you could go for the authentic look by buying the genuine article, made in the 1940s,  or buy from a company who specializes in reproducing the actual styles.  Don’t forget the high heeled platform shoes and red lipstick!

Now carrying pinup dresses from Bettie Page Clothing

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Two of the latest additions to our site  are dresses from the new Bettie Page clothing line.  Tatyana Khomyakova, designer and owner of the Las Vegas based boutique that bears the name of the legendary 1950’s pinup model ,  pays homage to Bettie by creating clothing that embodies her seductively feminine look. I’m really fond of their sexy girl next door vibe and look forward to adding additional styles in the next few weeks.

Atomic Bettie Productions for Pinup Perfect Glamour Shots

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Atomicbettie
My posts have been falling off lately while I try to get my newly designed wesite  launched.  But it’s all up and running now. So I’m finally able to get back to blogging!

One of the most exciting things about my new site is the fact that I now have images of  lovely pinup models showcasing my vintage reproduction dresses . The photos were taken by a very talented Miami  photographer named Janette Valentine.  Her Terribly Girly website is aptly named, because as it states on her site,  her photograpy is "inspired by the seductresses of vintage pulp classics and pinup beauties of yesteryear."

Beside Janette’s creative commercial ventures, she has also partnered with Michelle Paparian of House of Vintage   in Delray Beach, Florida,  along with a makeup artist and hair stylist to form Atomic Bettie Productions

These girls can tranform you into the pinup girl you always envisioned yourself to be, then provide you with a set of stunning glamour shots to pass out to all your friends, put on your myspace page or taunt your x-boyfriend with. The possiblilites are endless!

Actually many men order a photo shoot for their honeys, which is a fabulous and unique gift idea.  RIght now they’re already booked months in advance.  But if you’re planning a Florida vacation this coming winter and you’d like to come home with a sexy souvenir of your trip, then get in touch with them right away!
