Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Oranges, browns and golds are the colors that come to mind when thinking of fall and the Thanksgiving holiday. They were also very popular colors in the 60's and 70's.  So if you haven't found yourself an outfit yet, here are some cute retro options for Turkey Day.

Fudgy Chocolate Sauce Recipe from May 61 Woman’s Day

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

A reader wrote in that she'd like the recipe for the fudgy chocolate sauce shown in the Westinghouse Buffet Fry Pan in my Woman's Day post. So here it is.

Preheat Westinghouse Immerse-A-Matic (love that name!)  Fry Pan to 300 degrees.

When light goes off, turn heat indicator to "off."

Melt 1/4 cup butter in fry pan.
Stir in 1 cup chopped California walnuts.
Add one 6oz package (1 cup) Nestle's Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
Stir till melted and smooth.
Serve warm over ice cream on cake.

If you don't have a Westinghouse Fry Pan,  you can always heat the chocolate in the microwave or in a regular pan on the stove at a very low temperature.

But for true authenticity here's a link to a vintage Westinghouse skillet.

After doing an extensive Google search, I discovered this brand of fry pan is scarcer than hen's teeth!  If you want one, I suggest you snap this one up right away.  It's only $20.00.

Introducing our latest vintage reproduction dress

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Just in time for summer, here's a peek at the latest vintage reproduction dress design we're offering at Blue Velvet Vintage. Created in five different prints, two tropical florals, a Hawaiian tiki travel print,  a pink and white polka dot and a cute retro daisy print.  We named it the "Coquette" because of it's adorably flirty style.  Inspired by sundresses from the 40s snd 50s, they've even got metal zippers just like authentic vintage dresses!

We were fortunate to have the lovely Miss Amanda Lee modelling the dresses for us.   Amanda is a pinup model who bears a striking resemblance to Betty Grable. Among her many talents, she's also an expert on 1940's vintage hair and makeup techniques. Check out her My Space Page to read more about her.

Anne Taintor Bags- Retro Style with an Attitude

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

For many years  Anne Taintor has been giving the repressed 50s housewife her voice with a clever product line featuring refrigerator magnets, notepads, cards and pins.   Her vintage images, accompanied by their hilarious sarcastic comments, have recently become available in various styles of coordinating purses, bags and even compacts.  So you can now express your retro attitude wherever you go!

Some of my favorites are "Nothing says Hello Sailor quite like red lipstick", "Not all bad girls wear black", "Someone was going to have to set a bad example", "Maybe I want to look cheap" and "Honey, you couldn’t handle half of me."

Tis the Season to be Swanky

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

The holidays are a very nostalgic time of year.  So why not entertain in classic style with an old fashioned retro cocktail party?  There are plenty of helpful decorating tips, and food and drink recipes all over the internet to ensure you pull off the swankiest party on the block.

The Party Merchant  has tons of supplies to help you set the mood.  They also include a some great retro theme ideas , including food and drink suggestions.

From Bon Appetit Magazine, yummy appetizer recipes for a 50s cocktail party remixed for the 21st century.

Another stop should definitely be Martini Art , where they sell everything you need to shake and stir your way to cocktail nirvana.  There are also tons articles with party tips .  I love their suggestion of having your guests do a holiday gift exchange where everyone brings a unique martini glass. Sure beats the cookie swap they have in my neighborhood every year! They’ve also got a  great selection of gifts for the martini lover in your life.

Don’t forget cool atomic style party invitations from Rock Paper Scissor  and make sure you let your guests know only their finest vintage style cocktail wear is acceptable attire!  A black and white dress code is always very classy.  Women should channel Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys.  And for men, think Sean Connery as the original James Bond.

The Dame was Loaded Charm Bracelet

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Film_noir_bracelet After all the searching I did the other day on 1940’s film noir and telephones,  I was delighted to discover  this wickedly wonderful charm bracelet designed by Kerry Turner .  It  never ceases to amaze me what incredible things I can find on the internet when looking for vintage inspiration.   Ms. Turner describes her bracelet as "a darkly humorous tribute to the double-crossing dames of Film Noir."   She named it "the Dame was Loaded".

It is sterling silver with assorted beads. The charms include a black heart, a gun, a hand of cards, a perfume bottle, a pair of handcuffs and, of course, a telephone!

This is one fab bracelet and there are plenty more unique styles on her website to chose from. She’ll even design a custom one for you with a personalized theme.  What more could a dame ask for?
