Nothing Says Summer Like Gingham

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Designers are showing lots of gingham fashions for the upcoming summer season.  Check out InStyle’s Top Summer Fashion Trends to see Dita Von Teese rocking the gingham 50s style  and Katrina Bowden in a more contemporary silhouette.  Either way, gingham is classic and never really goes out of style!

Here is a spread from a 1961 McCalls magazine that features some spectacular gingham floral print separates by Sylvia de Gay for Robert Sloan.  I had never heard of Sylvia de Gay, but after doing a some googling I found our she won a Coty Fashion Critics Award in 1965.  Not surprised, since her sportswear is gorgeous!

Isn’t that ruffled eyelet blouse dreamy? I would love to have that to wear with some capris. And how adorable is that short gathered dress worn over the  cropped pants?

Found this lovely 1950’s Greta Plattry sundress over at Couture Allure. Greta Plattry is well known  by vintage clothing collectors as one of best mid 20th century American sportswear designers.

Pretty Alex Colman Vintage Summer Dresses

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Just added a couple of lovely Alex Colman 1950’s summer dresses to the our website.  See below.

California’s sportswear manufacturing industry was in full swing back in the 1950s. Like Florida, southern California had become quite the popular vacation spot.  Great weather, perfect for outside activities,  meant clothing designers had to keep up with the demand for apparel that was appropriate  for this more casual outdoor lifestyle.

But casual didn’t mean you weren’t still supposed to dress tastefully. Back in the 50s, what passes for casual wear today,  t-shirts with  offensive sayings on them , shorts so tiny you need to get a bikini wax to wear them and  raggedy sweatpants, would not have been acceptable in public.    Sportswear from that era was informal, but ladylike,   including  feminine sundresses, smart little playsuits, full skirts and capris with matching blouses.  You get the picture, classy, not trashy!

By far, one of my favorite sportswear makers is Alex Colman.  His family owned company made some of the prettiest, classiest women’s sportwear from the 50s thorugh the 80s and they were especially known for their beautiful prints.

For more on the background of  Alex Colman, you can read this interview that Vintage Fashion Guild member, Lizzie Bramlet, did with Robert Colman, the son of the founder of the company.

Have been getting seriously behind with the blog posts lately. But for good reason. It’s not like I’ve been lounging around eating bon bons all day!   I’ve actually been madly cleaning, photographing and writing descriptions for a bunch of recently acquired vintage dresses and a new delivery of some stunning vintage inspired gowns.

Here’s a small sampling. Lots more to come!  Click on images for more information.

Red & Green Vintage Holiday Fashions

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Have been surfing around on the “internets” , as one of my favorite funny men,  Stephen Colbert, likes to call it, looking for fabulously festive red and green vintage fashions that are perfect for wearing this holiday season.   I love looking at stuff and blog posts give me a perfect excuse to do it!

My first pick is this amazing 50’s dress from Fast Eddie’s Retro Rags with gorgeous red roses and green leaves that really pop against the white background.  Just add a little red cardigan, red jewelry,  and of course, red heels and lipstick and you’ll be the classiest doll on Christmas Day!

Now,  for the fancy schmancy shindig,  like an honest to goodness white tie event, how about this incredible red satin 50’s ball gown from Couture Allure Vintage? Definitely calls for opera length gloves and really glittery necklace and earrings.

And if you prefer the sleek lines of the 70’s, here’s a slinky rhinestone embellished  deep forest green jersey halter gown from Blue Velvet Vintage.  The style is a nod to the 1940s era, which was very common to the styles of the 1970s.   The waistband is rhinestone accented with the words “La Vive” , meaning  bright or vivacious, which is just what you’ll be when you  sashay out the door in this sexy little number!

Little Black Dresses-Recent additions at Blue Velvet Vintage

Friday, August 7th, 2009

The little black dress is a classic wardrobe staple and shopping for  new often leaves  you with a choice of cookie cutter styles.   And who wants to look like everyone else at their next cocktail party? But  if you choose a black vintage dress,  they are usually unique enough in construction, fabric and design details that you’re sure to stand out in that sea of LBDs.  Here are some of our recent additions that will help you show your individuality. Please visit our What’s New page for more little black dresses from the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Known for their chic, ladylike elegance, Herbert Sondheim manufactured dresses,  inspired by Paris fashions,  from the 30s through the 60s.  Jackie Kennedy even wore his dresses! He also taught at the Parson School of Design.
