It’s National Hat Day!

Friday, January 15th, 2010

That’s right. In case you didn’t know it, January 15th is National Hat Day.   It’s a holiday invented by the Hatwear Association to promote hat wearing and the hat industry.

So in honor of the day I’m going to wear my favorite fedora.  Though I really wish I had something more fun to wear, like this fine, feathered,   fruity beauty on Carmen Miranda.

Cocktail Hats and Fascinators

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Little cocktail hats and feathery, flowery fascinator headpieces have been around since the 1800’s.  An alternative to a large, wide brimmed hats, they are the perfect finishing touch for prom dresses, cocktail outfits,  evening gowns and wedding dresses.   A fabulous vintage look that has been very popular in England and Australia for quite some time and, to my delight,  has finally caught on over here in the United States.  There are now many talented craftspeople offering their versions of these chic little sculptures for your crowning glory!

So if you’ve got an event coming up this spring or summer.  Please visit some of the sites below to find yourself a fabulous, fascinating vintage inspired hair accessory that’s sure to get you noticed!

Favorite Photos of 40’s Hats

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I collect lots of vintage fashion magazines and books for educational purposes,  but especially enjoy looking at the beautiful photos and illustrations. Just thought I’d share some of my favorite pictures of women’s hats from the 1940’s.

It’s unfortunate that we don’t wear beautiful hats much anymore. I guess it’s because these type of hats look too formal to fit in with our more casual lifestyles.   But people took more care with their appearance back then and hats were masterpieces of design that really completed an outfit, adding the perfect finishing touch of elegance, sophistication and glamour.  Desirable attributes that, in my opinion,  are lacking in our modern day society based on the extreme disregard for personal appearance I witness on a daily basis!

Fabulous Vintage Hats-A Distinctive Style Statement

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

I’ve always loved hats, especially vintage hats. The reason I don’t collect them is I’m afraid if I start, I won’t stop!  I’m already running out of storage space as it is.  But I can certainly understand how it could become a lifetime obsession for a collector, as hats are wearable works of art,  elegant sculptures that define your personality or mood. A beautiful hat is just about impossible to gaze upon without it evoking some type of favorable emotion or memory.

Which brings me to the reason for this post.  My friend Nancy, who designs fabulous clothing from vintage textiles and sells under the label "Janie’s of Miami", has been granted the opportunity to help a famous hat aficionado part with some of her amazing collection.

According to Nancy’s article About the Passionate Collector , this woman was a "former hat model for Neiman Marcus.  Mrs A has met and modeled for
most major millinery designers and owns something from every heavy
hitter- Frank Olive, Jack McConnell, Elsa Schiaparelli, Lilly Dashe,
Sally Victor, Raymond Hudd, Bes- Ben."

She estimates she owns between 800 and 1000  hats, wears a different one every day and  claims men love to see women wearing them!

Here is just a small sampling of what’s currently available in Nancy’s Ebay  store and she adds more all the time.

Hats

The hats range from the turn of the century to the 1980’s and each one is exquisitely distinctive in its own way.  There are also adorable  miniature  hat boxes with their original miniature hats, which I discovered are salesman’s samples. Men would receive one of these when given a hat as a gift,  then they would take it to the shop to be fitted for that particular top hat or fedora. These would make a wonderfully unique gift for the vintage loving guy in your life. They’re quite the conversation piece and would look very cool sitting on top of a men’s dresser.
