A Look at Tall Ships and Nautical Fashions

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Well, I finally made my way down to Boston Harbor to see those magnificient classic sailing ships docked on the waterfront.  Boston is one of official ports of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge,  a regatta  that started  in Spain and will end up in Ireland.

Below are some shots I took. The rest are in my Tall Ships Sail Boston Photo Album.

The 185 foot Europa, from the Netherlands, docked at Rowes Wharf Marina at the Boston Harbor Hotel.

There’s such a air of romance that surrounds these majestic vessels.   You can’t help but fantasize about what it would be like to chuck the day job for a life of high seas adventure and exotic ports of call, accompanied by a crew of cute sailor boys, of course!

But  if you can’t stow away on a sailing ship, at least you can celebrate the seafaring life with some cute nautical inspired  fashion.   Here are some of my vintage style picks to keep you looking SEE worthy all summer!

Eco-friendly Girly Glam Retro Lingerie

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

You know I love sharing sources for unique,  retro style goodies, especially by indie designers.  Well, my sister, who is a graphic artist with a very discerning eye for cool designs,  recently sent me a link to a website full of  the most fabulously feminine vintage inspired lingerie I’ve ever seen. The line is called Clare Bare .

According to the designer, Clare Herron, her lingerie is “constructed to frame your body, fit comfortably and make you feel naturally beautiful as you should.”

She thinks of  her undergarments as accessories, so they are meant to be seen.   Constructed of authentic vintage textiles and organic cottons, they are also eco-friendly.  Clare recommends layering her bras with tank tops and  letting the  underpants show over the tops of  hip hugger jeans, which is a much more tasteful alternative than revealing your g-string.

Vintage Style at the Golden Globes

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Well, it’s taken me two days, but I’ve finally come up with some of my favorite vintage and vintage inspired dresses worn at this year’s Golden Globe awards.

From what I’ve been reading on many fashion blogs, neutrals were very big this year, especially white, as were strapless and one shoulder styles, belted gowns, and mermaid hems. The overall sense was there was a more understated glamour to many of the fashions, with less flashy jewelry and  worn with casual hairdos, bordering on messy, and minimal makeup.

Below I’ve compiled some of my favorite dresses because of their vintage vibe.

1. The always classy Kate Winslet in a very elegant and sophisticated black strapless gown with a velvet belt by Yves St. Laurent. Very Audrey-esque.

2. Drew Barrymore in a cool blue/gray mermaid gown by John Galliano for Dior. The red  evening bag adds a nice touch of color. Not too crazy about that big hair, though.

3. Heidi Klum opted for short, in a fabulously flirty 80s vintage Galanos polka dot party dress with a big red rose accent.

4. Angelina wore a sleek, silvery 70s inspired Versace  gown with blouson bodice.  There are varied opinions on this dress, a lot of which are unflattering. I personally like the dress. It has a sensuous, goddess look to it.  Though that blouson style can be tough to pull off, I think Angelina looks lovely in it. Though many would disagree.

5. Love the midnight blue color of this strapless Armani gown worn by Anne Hathaway.  Very classic 40’s Hollywood glamour. It is overlaid with black netting and decorated with blue beading. The full flowing skirt below the fitted hip area is very flattering.

6. Another gorgeous 40s inspired creation. A Reem Acra design worn by Olivia Wilde. This dress is all pretty and feminine, with its full ruffled skirt. The lavender color is beautiful.

7. Laura Linney’s Grecian inspired Elie Saab gown in a stunning yellow shade.  Not an easy color to wear for a lot of people, but  I think it looks fabulous on her.

8. Eva Longoria wore a red strapless tight fitting mermaid gown by Reem Acra. One of my favorite colors in a classic 50’s Hollywood starlet style.

Of course I couldn’t leave out my favorite Mad Maidens of the Mad Men series.

1. January Jones in a vintage inspired ice blue satin gown by Versace. She’s got that classy Grace Kelly thing going on in a big way.

2. Elizabeth Moss in an adorable red vintage Givenchy dress.  I’m a big fan of full chiffon 50’s skirts.  Then there’s that red color that I love and those interesting straps.

3. Always the bombshell, Christina Hendricks is simply smouldering in this curvy strapless black number by Tadashi Shoji.

So what do you think of my favorite choices?  Love them or hate them? Let me know. Don’t worry, I can take it!

DIY- Holiday flower hair clips and corsages

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Since flower pins and  hair clips provide a nice finishing touch to a vintage outfit, I thought I’d whip myself up something festive to go with the red 50’s dress I plan on wearing for Christmas.  Of course, I was having so much fun that I got carried away and ended up making bazillions of holiday corsages and hair ornaments.  That means all the guests coming over for dinner will be forced to wear one, and that includes the guys too.  If you ask me, it’s a small price to pay for getting to eat the special gourmet feast I have planned for them!

They’re really quite easy to make with your handy dandy glue gun.  You can get poinsettias, faux pine branches and sparkly doodads in the silk flower sections of most craft stores. I got mine at Michaels.  Crafts stores also carry pin backs and hair clips and you can also visit a beauty supply store, like Sally’s, for hair clips if your local craft store doesn’t have them.

Here is a picture of my holiday accessory arsenal.

Poinsettia pins

First thing I did was remove all the poinsettias and leaves off their branches, cut up the pine branches and took apart the sprigs of sparkly doodads. I glued a leaf onto the top of the clip or pin back and for the pin backs I glued a tiny leaf over the other side to hide the metal. Not necessary, I just think it looks neater. Using the leaf as a base, I started glueing on various pieces, topping with a poinsettia or two or three.

Here are some of the finished products. Once you get going, they go pretty quickly.

Baby, it’s cold outside! Time for a stylish vintage coat.

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Ok, so it's only been 65 degrees here,  which may not seem that cold to most people. But after living in Florida for many years,  it feels absolutely frigid to me!  I know, I know. I'm a wimp.   Sometimes it actually even dips into the 40's down here.  And that's when I wish I had myself a fabulous vintage winter coat.  So I did some searching and here are the ones I'm fantasizing about wearing during the next cold snap. If I had one of these lovelies to keep me warm,  I might not mind those occasional drops in temperature.

This first one is from the late 40s/early 50s. Flattering "New Look" style in black wool with fantastic black velvet diamond appliques. From Couture Allure Vintage-  $300.00

How to get that 50’s hourglass shape

Monday, November 10th, 2008

No,  you won't get it by working out in the gym a gazillion hours a week or by starving yourself or having liposuction.  The secret is in foundation garments.  I'm not talking Spanx type shapewear, either. That's pretty wimpy stuff compared to what  women wore in the 1950's to wrestle their body into that curvy, wasp waisted shape.

Nowadays most women would never dream of cramming themselves into a real girdle in order to make their clothes fit better. But I assure you, if you want to wear a vintage pencil skirt,  a girdle will tuck everything neatly into place, smooth out every bulge and minimize the waist nicely. And they're actually quite comfortable once you get used to them!

Here's a vintage girdle ad with a promise of looking younger and sizes smaller!

Another nifty item is the waist cincher, which does just what it's name implies.  You can easily carve off a couple of inches or three with one of these handy dandy items.  Great for getting into vintage dresses you thought wouldn't fit you.

Notice how the ad promises to "hide bulges" and "streamline the waist". That's exactly what a waist cincher will do.  Not sure about the spelling of the name "Figure Mold" though.  Makes me think of some kind of nasty fungus, as in, "Gee, honey,  after wearing that waist cincher all day in the humid weather,  sure looks like you got yourself a bad case of "figure mold!"

Another necessary evil needed to complete that 50's hourglass silhouette is a cone shaped, pointy bra.  Of course, no self respecting sweater girl would be caught dead without her trusty bullet bra.  Though they are guaranteed to lift and separate, there is always the risk of putting somebody's eye out!

Maidenform bullet bra

Other lingerie items that play a supporting role in shaping the 50's figure are corsets, corsellettes, merry widows, garter belts, seamed stockings and bustiers.  The websites listed below are some great places to help get yourself into some authentic vintage or vintage style foundation garments, if you're up for the challenge!

Nataya dresses now at Blue Velvet Vintage

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Am very excited to report that I've just added a lovely selection of dresses by Nataya to my website. I've always admired her feminine vintage inspired designs and am now very happy to be able to offer them to my customers.

Inga Nataya Bogomolny started designing clothing when she was 11 years old.  When her family moved to the United States from Uzbekistan, in 1990, she attended the LA County School for the Arts and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. After learning the fashion trade as a designer for Papillon, she started her own line in 1996.

Her clothing is often referred to as "wearable art"  because of the generous use of embroidery, beading and various other ornamentation incorporated into her outfits.  Inspiration comes from the Belle Epoque and Baroque periods, with a 20's, 30's or 40's flair.  Sensuous, bohemian, ethereal, romantic and glamorous are appropriate words to accurately describe her creations.

Below are a few of the styles I just added.  They certainly are enchanting alternatives for those seeking a less formal look for their prom or wedding.  And if you've got a fancy cocktail party to attend or a special date, these unique creations will definitely leave a lasting impression!  I can also special order other colors, sizes and styles.
