In Vogue November 1963-Makeup and Hairstyles

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

My fourth and last post on fashion trends shown in Vogue Magazine, November 1963, highlights hair and makeup.

In the photo below you can see that the eyes have it! The focus was on a heavily lined cat eye, framed by long dark lashes. Blue, green and purple eyeshadows were also very popular.   Of course, the darker the eye, the paler the lipcolor, so as not to look overly made up.   If you care to try it, you can refer to my previous post for creating the cat eye look. It’s quite the sexy, dramatic look for evening.

When most people think of hairstyles from the 60s, the flip and the beehive are the first two that come to mind.  But if you look below, you’ll see there were other popular hairdos, all very sleek and sculptural.   In the 60s there is no doubt rollers and hair lacquer were two very important items in the fashionable woman’s beauty arsenal, as were wigs and falls, which allowed for the creation of some very elaborate updos.  Since the November 1963 Vogue focuses on fashions for the holiday season, many of the hairstyles are shown on models wearing evening dresses. Notice the  glittery  jewelled accents in the hair.  Tres chic!

In Vogue November 1963-Fur Fashions

Friday, November 27th, 2009

My third installment of fashion highlights from the November 1963 issue of Vogue Magazine is fur.   It was not yet politically incorrect to wear it, as the anti fur movement wouldn’t start gathering steam until the latter part of the decade .  So in ‘63  you could still flaunt your fur without fear of it being spray painted!

Below is an ad for leopard fur accessories. Leopard was a very desirable fur to wear in the 60s, which is why it is, along with many other animals,  now on the endangered species list. Today even vintage leopard fur is illegal to sell over state lines.

Is it just me, or does the woman in the fabulous pill box hat bear an uncanny resemblance to Christina Hendricks, who plays Joan Holloway on Mad Men?

These images show how in 63 the very glamorous, timeless look of full length mink coats and fur stoles worn for evening was still popular. But furs were also starting to be designed for the world of sportswear.  In this instance for an apres  ski outfit.  You know those jetsetters,  they  had to look the height of fashion and affluence,  even while sipping  their Brandy Alexanders  in Aspen!

In Vogue-November 1963-At Home Fashions

Here’s my second post featuring fashion highlights from Vogue Magazine in November  1963 and it’s focus is on  loungewear.   Clothing for entertaining at home was very much in style.  The fashion conscious woman’s wardrobe included chic  hostess gowns, dinner  pajamas and peignoir sets.  Lingerie blurred the line between sleepwear and cocktail wear.  Take a look at the casually elegant designer  lounging outfits below. What I like about them is they’re informal and comfortable, while still managing to look glamorous.   A much classier look for hanging around the house than the sweat pants and T-shirts commonly worn today!

The season finale of Mad Men aired this past Sunday night and it seems like the show  just started! How I wish it ran all year round.  I’m already missing the slick acting, the stylish sets and all those swanky guys and glamorous women who always manage to look  so chic no matter what crisis or drama they’re embroiled in!

This past season’s episodes took place in the fall/winter of 1963, and I just discovered I actually  have a November 1963  issue of Vogue magazine.  So in honor of my favorite show I’m going to write several posts this month featuring all kinds of beautiful fashions that were popular from that time period.

The November 63 issue focused a lot on evening wear for the upcoming holidays.  Here are some of my favorites. Which dress can you picture on which woman of Mad Men?  Bombshell Joan, the Grace Kelly like Betty Draper,  Pete’s socialite wife Trudy or Rogers Sterling’s gold digging wife, Jane? It would be tough to imagine Peggy in any one  of these unless Don gives her a big raise so she can afford one.
