Last week I stopped into one of my favorite shops in downtown Stuart, Florida, where I live. Patty’s Antiques is a cute, cozy place full of shabby chic goodness. My friend Patty and her husband, have owned the store for many years. And they are both masters at refinishing, painting and crafting, giving new life to the found objects that end up in their talented hands.
Upon entering I was immediately drawn to this fabulous hutch that they had recently repainted in a soft gray with ivory trim. Patty always does such a brilliant job of merchandising, that every time I go in there I want to redecorate my house!
And, of course, I never tire of looking at all the interesting smaller items she has on display. On this particular day I spotted these adorable sachets made from vintage gloves!!! I was instantly captivated. I totally love the idea of re-purposing vintage items rather than tossing them. Vintage gloves are so pretty and made of lovely fabrics, but often are too small to wear. So this is a fantastic way to preserve them and give them a new use.
Unfortunately Patty does not sell any of her lovely creations online. So, unless you live in or visit this area you won’t be able to get your hands on any of these beauties. But….if you are handy at all, you can always make your own!
I’m thinking with Christmas coming up, these would be fun gifts to make. And it’s a great project to do with little girls. They’ll have a grand time blinging out their gloves!
All you need to do is hunt thrift stores, flea markets and antique malls for old gloves, scraps of lace and trim, buttons, broken costume jewelry, etc. The sky is the limit here!
Visit your local craft and fabric store for faux silk flowers and fancy ribbon.
Buy dried herbs and/or flowers, like lavender, rosebuds or whatever strikes your fancy. You can get them in bulk from sites like this.
Then just fill up your gloves with the potpourri of your choice, sew them closed at the top and go to town decorating the heck out of them! If you have even the most basic sewing skills and can use a glue gun, then you can make these whimsical little sachets. And they are sure to surprise and delight anyone who receives one as a gift.
