Time for another yearly post about the Roaring Twenties Lawn Party held at the Crane Estate in Ipswich Ma. This is one of my favorite vintage themed events that I attend. It’s a weekend affair with tons of activities, beach parties, great bands playing jazz era music, dancing, charleston lessons, picnics, vendors selling all kinds of vintage goodies, lawn games, antique car rides and tours of the magnificent estate.
For my outfit his year I sewed up cotton print beach pajamas using a McCall’s jumpsuit pattern. I did alter the pattern so that the back and front bodice were the same wrap style and added contrast bias tape to trim out the armholes and neckline. The pattern also calls for an elastic waist band, which I left off, making the jumpsuit an easy step in style. I then added a sash belt to cinch it in.
Topped it with a yellow vintage rayon kimono jacket. The yellow and ivory T strap spectator pumps are from Chelsea Crew. (older pair) I cut some matching fabric to make a hat band for the straw cloche. And as a nod to one of my fashion idols, Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher, I donned a black wig and round sunglasses
I went on Sunday, as Saturday turned out to be rainy a good part of the day. And even though it had cleared up by Sunday, it was uncomfortably hot. If you want to stake out a good spot on the lawn you have to arrive early. That means more hours of baking in the sun. I did have a parasol and a lawn chair with an awning over it, but for such a long hot day that didn’t really cut it. So I vow next year to have a pop up tent for shade. I’m already fantasizing how I can glam it up. Something like this.
The gentlemen below, who looks like an adventurer from the Jazz Age, was kind enough to let me sit behind the wheel of his 1929 Roosevelt so my friend could take my picture.
The grounds and gardens at the Crane Estate are beautiful. Luckily there were some shady spots I could escape to, even though they were a distance from the festivities.
Walking in all that grass creeped me out though. Deer ticks are rampant in New England and I had already been bitten once before and had to do three weeks of doxycycline for Lyme disease. Very unpleasant side effects. So I kept checking my legs all day to make sure none of those nasty critters crawled on me!

This young couple set up right next to us. They were so adorable and friendly. I couldn’t resist taking this picture of them relaxing. The guy had brought three shirt changes and because of the heat had gone through all of them, opting finally for just wearing his vest.
At sundown it got a bit cooler and I was able to get some garden photos.
The rest of my pix I had to put in a gallery or you’d have to scroll forever! You can also click to enlarge them and view as a slide show if you wish.
Till next time……
