My Budget Friendly Retro Kitchen Makeover

When my husband and I moved into our 70s ranch home several years ago, we knew at some point the  kitchen was going to need some sprucing up.   The original white formica cabinets were chipped and discolored and the finish on the gray formica countertops was dull and scratched.  Not surprising since they were  40 years old!

Well, we finally decided recently that something had to be done. The kitchen just looked too darn tired!  But […]

Ladies Home Journal June 1945-Home Decorating

For your perusal, some mid century modern home decorating and design from the June  1945 issue of Ladies Home Journal.  The image below is from an ad  for Armstrong linoleum floors.  It is a redesign of a sun porch turned music room.  Notice how they had the linoleum cut to form a pattern reminiscent of a musical note.

1950s Kitchen Design Inspirations

Kitchens in the 50s had such an optimistic look about them.   I think that’s why they appeal to me  so much.   All those delicious pastel colors and those cool space age appliances. The war was over, the economy was booming, people were into entertaining.  Their home decorating was a reflection of their postive outlook  on the future.    Maybe that’s why we don’t see so much of that type of cheerful decor anymore!

Here are some scans […]
